The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is reminding residents to think fire safety as they decorate their homes for Christmas.
Some families prefer a real tree, but they pose an added fire risk, especially if exposed to heat or flame.
Fire Prevention Officer Cara Pardy is offering a few hints for those who are heading out to pick up a real tree.
“Check to make sure that it’s not already dried out, so just give it a tap on the ground. If the needles start to fall off, then it’s too dry and you should choose another one,” says Pardy. “Once you get your tree home, cut a few inches off the bottom of the trunk of it so you’ve got a nice, fresh area for the water to absorb through. And, water your tree every single day. At least check it every single day.
