Those planning to ring in the new year with fireworks are urged to do so safely.
Many municipalities will permit residents to use backyard fireworks during a designated timeframe.
Displays are only to be set off by those over the age of 18 in an open area—away from people, buildings, vehicles and public spaces.
George Xidous of Discount Fireworks on Kenmount Road says following the instructions is of the utmost importance.
Any spectators should be at least 20 metres away from where the fireworks are being lit. Those lighting them should bury them in sand to enhance stability. It’s also recommended to keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher handy in case the explosive doesn’t burn out fully once it has ignited.
