The new president of the fisheries union is hopeful that they won’t land in the same situation this year as last when they, government and the processors were all at odds over price.
Finding a pricing schedule for crab which is suitable to harvester and processor has been elusive to say the least, but FFAW President Dwan Street is optimistic that they will find that common ground.
Both the union and the Association of Seafood Producers have new boards of executives heading into the 2025 talks. Street says disruptions in the fishery do neither side any good.
She believes they have the base structure on which they can build.
Rebate payments are going out to harvesters, so we look at what worked and didn’t work, then I think we can have our members get a fair return on the product,” says Street.
