In Newfoundland and Labrador, they’re known as partridgeberries.
But outside this province they are more commonly known as lingonberries, and they have been identified as a fruit that can become a big factor to improve health.
Lingonberries, which produce a small, tart and slightly sweet berry taste, are native to northern regions of Canada.
Dr. Samir Debnath, a research scientist at the St. John’s Research and Development Centre, says work is being done to maximize the production and growth of the berries locally.
This province is the largest producer of the berries, which some categorize as a “super food.”
Debnath says they are higher in antioxidants than other more common berries, including blueberries.
