Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) will be working on decorum around council tables in 2025 as they try to encourage more people to get involved in their local councils.
Next fall will play host to municipal elections across the province.
But because the standard election day, the last Tuesday in September, falls on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the province has agreed to delay municipal elections until Thursday, Oct. 2.
MNL is gearing up for election season with its Make Your Mark campaign, which encourages people to run for municipal politics.
MNL President Amy Coady says the emphasis will be on decorum and keeping things civil around the council table and in communities.
“We can disagree respectfully, and in calm manners, but some of us have forgotten how to do that,” she said.
Coady notes that can be a deterrent for people who don’t want to have that kind of negativity in their lives.
