The provincial government says there has been a cybersecurity incident involving the PowerSchool program.
Government was first notified of the breach yesterday afternoon.
The third-party app provides all information related to student grades, attendance and assignments, and involves customers in multiple jurisdictions across North America.
Education Minister Krista Lynn Howell says is working with the company to determine the extent of data accessed and the number of people involved.
She says the student information system was accessed, which contains things like student names, MCP numbers and addresses. Howell says the data stored on the system goes back to 1995. Data for more current students could also include things like grades and information meant for caregivers.
PowerSchool has indicated that it does not anticipate that the data involved is being shared or made public and it believes it has been deleted without any further replication or dissemination.
The company says the incident has been contained and security has been increased to prevent further incidents.
No misuse of personal information or financial harm to affected users is expected by PowerSchool. Credit monitoring services are being provided to affected adults.
