The Churchill Falls MOU has passed in the House of Assembly, but not before the entire PC caucus walked out on the proceedings.
Debate in the legislature, including closing speeches, went up against the clock, finishing just a few minutes shy of 9 p.m.
When it came time for the final vote, the PCs, having been vocal that they would not support the MOU if their requests for an independent review were not met, walked off the floor of the House of Assembly.
Minister Gerry Byrne could be heard saying “you’re surrendering your voice” and “you’re here to represent people” as they defiantly filed out.
In the end the MOU passed 25-0 without the PCs present.
The NDP and independents, who said they’d support the MOU after government agreed to an oversight committee headed by the Consumer Advocate, received applause and cheers from the government side as their names were counted in the vote.
