2025 marks a major milestone for Memorial University.
The province’s largest post-secondary institution celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
Memorial was established as a single college with just three programs when it officially opened its doors in 1925, gradually expanding over the decades to a fully-fledged university with more than 300 programs across six campuses.
Chancellor of MUN’s Board of Regents, Earl Ludlow, told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly the idea behind creating a college stemmed from a desire to move away from the traditional denominational delivery of education in what was the Dominion of Newfoundland.
He says it was out of that effort, spearheaded by three individuals representing three denominations, that the Memorial University College opened in 1925 with just 57 students.
A number of special projects and events are planned throughout the coming year to highlight MUN’s impact on the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
