“Beware.”
That’s the advice of former premier Danny Williams before Newfoundland and Labrador inks any final deal with Hydro Quebec on the Upper Churchill and future hydro development in Labrador.
Williams says he’s especially concerned with remarks from Hydro Quebec, crowing about the “bargain” they’re getting from Newfoundland and Labrador on hydro power.
He thinks Newfoundland and Labrador should be getting at least twice the four cents a kilowatt hour for hydro energy as outlined in the MOU.
Williams says doing a deal with Quebec is fine, as long as Newfoundland and Labrador is getting a fair deal.
“I think Quebec has got what they want, when they want it and for as long as they want it,” says Williams, “hopefully the government gets back to the bargaining table and tries to strengthen up this agreement.”
Meanwhile, Energy Minister Andrew Parsons says the questions Williams is raising are the same ones that were raised—and answered—in the House of Assembly last week.
Parsons suggests that people who have questions go back and watch the debate, or read hansard.
Parsons says getting “summary of what Quebec media are saying” from Williams as “more of the same old rhetoric” that got us into Muskrat Falls. He says “it’s frustrating when you’ve been cleaning something, and cleaning something and the person that made the mess tells you how to hold the mop.”
