Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker has suggested that the provincial government consider drafting a set of standards for those who own and operate heavy machinery.
Aker made the suggestion after the latest incident involving the use of heavy equipment to smash open a bank to remove the ATM—this time at the RBC on Commonwealth Avenue.
Service NL says it shares the public’s concern surrounding the use of heavy equipment to cause such extensive damage and is open to discussion about how those incidents can be prevented. The RNC is urging contractors to take additional measures to prevent those with criminal intent from making use of excavators and backhoes in their endeavors.
The department says while it is involved in the regulation of heavy equipment and construction vehicles when operated on roadways, the security of that equipment is the responsibility of the owner.
