The FFAW is very concerned with the possibility that Donald Trump’s administration will impose threatened tariffs on Canadian goods when he assumes office in the United States.
Union President Dwan Street says 90 per cent of snow crab caught in this province is bound for restaurants in the US, and a tariff would have a devastating impact on the local industry.
She says they can’t diversify into other markets, “that’s our market” and if a 25 per cent tariff is imposed it will “hit us hard.” She warns how that risk is shared between harvesters and producers “is going to be a hard conversation.”
In the meantime, the province has set up a round table to discuss the potential impact of threatened tariffs and Canadian action to address the matter, and the FFAW is at the table.
