A local tech blogger believes Meta’s decision to end its third party fact-checking system in the United States in favour of a “community notes” system will have a carry over into Canada.
Meta is the parent company of social media sites like Instagram and Facebook.
Kevin Andrews says the new system is similar to what Elon Musk has introduced on X.
He says the process will involve the participation of approved contributors , and the use of an algorithm to determine the validity of certain posts.
Andrews notes that critics are arguing that the new process could allow for more misinformation to spread as it relies heavily on community participation and an algorithm working in the background.
Some people, according to Andrews, say that the decision is a political one that was made to appease incoming US President Donald Trump, who CEO Mark Zuckerberg has had problems with in the past.
