A new 10-storey apartment building planned for the east end of St. John’s is one step closer to the finish line.
It’s pegged for New Cove Road on the site of the former YMCA and Max Athletics building, which will be torn down to make way for the new structure.
Developer KMK Capital managed to catch a few breaks from the city in order to make the project work.
The land had to be rezoned, they came up six parking spaces short of what was required, and they won’t need to add a building setback.
Nonetheless, the necessary amendments have been OK’d by the province and were unanimously adopted by council this week.
The next-to-last step is a public hearing, set for 7:00 p.m. on Feb. 12th at City Hall, with an option to attend via Zoom.
The subsequent hearing report and entire project will then come back to council for a final vote.
A separate two-storey parking garage, which was part of the original application, is no longer part of the plan.
