No one was injured but residents of St. Anthony are in shock following the loss of the local Boys and Girls Club.
Fire broke out in the Annex, one of the original Grenfell Mission buildings, at about 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
Mayor Brad Johannessen, who is also the town’s deputy fire chief, says the building was destroyed despite efforts to save it by the St. Anthony and St. Lunaire-Griquet fire departments.
They were able, however, to prevent the fire from spreading.
Johannessen says the building was more than 100 years old and most recently housed the local Boys and Girls Club.
“We have a lot of people that go down there for programs throughout the summer and after school, that kind of thing,” he said. “There are a lot of disappointed kids here today.”
Firefighters worked through the night to douse the flames and contain the blaze.
Johannessen says there was a diesel tank on the back of the building that was cause for concern, but crews were able to keep water on it to reduce the risk.
Area MHA, education minister and former mayor of St. Anthony, Krista Lynn Howell, says after-school programs will move to White Hills Academy for the time being.
But she says the long-term solution is a different matter which will require a more extensive community effort.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
