Over the next few months, patients and staff are transitioning from the old Waterford Hospital in St. John’s to the new facility at the Health Sciences Centre.
However, the struggle to find mental health care is still a concern. Wait lists for psychology and psychiatry are long, and there is generally a shortage of mental health care professionals.
John Dinn, a regional manager with the Canadian Mental Health Association in St. John’s, says this province has some of the longest wait times for mental health services in the country.
He says they are seeing psychologists moving from the public system to private practice, and that’s causing a service gap.
