Premier Andrew Furey hopes an IVF clinic can be set up in the province in about a year.
Establishing such a clinic is a commitment Furey made on the campaign trail during the 2021 provincial election.
Four years have now passed, and Furey says it remains a “firm commitment.”
He notes that the government began the process with a travel subsidy for people who had to go outside the province for IVF, which is nearly 100 percent used, and they are currently reviewing the Thinkwell report into the province’s fertility services.
Furey says the report will inform how they can set up a clinic locally, which he hopes can be done very quickly.
While he hasn’t read the report yet, he has friends who work in obstetrics and gynecology who say the clinic can be set up quickly. “Hopefully, this gives us a roadmap that will allow us to establish this clinic by the end of 2025 or early 2026.”
