Premier Andrew Furey is among those mourning the loss of a Newfoundland sailor in Nova Scotia.
Thirty-eight-year-old Greg Applin, who was a member of the HMCS Montreal, died after a small inflatable boat he was in capsized during an exercise near Halifax.
Furey says it is “tough” to hear the news of Applin’s death, noting that he “made incredible sacrifices” serving everyone in the country.
Furey says he did that because he understood and wanted to protect Canadian values and was willing to put his life at risk for them.
The Premier says it is important for people to recognize the sacrifices that people in the armed forces make day in, and day out.
Furey says it “stings” to hear of Applin’s death. Furey recalls the repatriation of the Unknown Soldier last year, stating that “these are our known soldiers. And so his legacy should be that we not forget his sacrifice, just like we didn’t forget the sacrifice of the Unknown Soldier. This Petty Officer Applin deserves and demands our full respect for his service and for his legacy.”
