Dozens of people rallied outside Her Majesty’s Penitentiary this afternoon seeking improvements to mental health care at the facility.
Advocates for better mental health and addictions care gathered outside the corrections centre with a message for the provincial government: do better.
Parents and advocates carried signs reading “Justice for Mental Health, not isolation,” and “no drugs in jail.”
Beverly, whose son Mitchell Murphy is incarcerated at HMP, says her son’s mental health has deteriorated significantly, and she wants him transferred to a hospital for treatment.She says her son is suffering from psychosis – a situation that can’t be addressed at HMP.
She’s also noticed a decline in Mitchell’s physical health.
“He does not realize realized he’s sick, and I don’t think that being treated here at HMP is a proper way to treat someone in that state.”
