While stakeholders in the fishery are trying to find a path forward in response to the threat of US tariffs, the president of the FFAW says it is also important to look at plans for the long-term.
Dwan Street and Association of Seafood Producers Executive Director Jeff Loder held a joint news conference on Monday calling for talks with senior officials both provincially and federally to figure out a path forward for the fishery.
Street points out that the situation isn’t just important for this fishing season, but for the next four years that Donald Trump is US President.
She says they need to be prepared for “the uncertainty that’s going to come over the next four years.”
Meanwhile, Premier Andrew Furey says he is agreeable to the FFAW and ASP’s request for an industry-specific roundtable to talk about what needs to be done for the fishery in particular, noting that he had already agreed to that during last week’s discussions.
Furey expects that those discussions will happen sometime this week.
