Local grocers are working to help customers interested in supporting Canadian jobs and businesses make informed choices.
The Powell Group of Companies and Atlantic Grocery Distributors have a range of signs and stickers to help consumers with Product of Canada, Made in Canada and Proudly Prepared in NL on various products.
Senior Director of Retail at the Powell Group of Companies John Pritchett says Product of Canada denotes that 98 per cent of the production costs are Canadian, while a Made in Canada is at least 51 per cent.
Pritchett says the US and Canadian economies are so intertwined that some products cross the border more than once before arriving on store shelves.
In other cases, product may not meet federal thresholds, but are still benefiting local workers and companies. That’s where the Proudly Prepared in NL designation comes in.
“It’s about does it support Newfoundland and Labrador jobs and does it support Canadian jobs?” says Pritchett. “So we’re making sure because we can more closely understand that Browning Harvey for example is operating here in Newfoundland and Labrador, we can say ‘yeah, that’s proudly prepared in NL.'”
