The president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour says while addressing internal trade is an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to the threat of U.S. tariffs, it is not the only thing that should be considered.
Jessica McCormick recently attended the Canada-U.S. Economic Summit held by the federal government.
She says the removal of internal trade barriers was a big topic of discussion.
McCormick is worried about what the impacts could be on jobs if due to removing trade barriers.
She uses the Labatt and Molson breweries in St. John’s as an example, noting that it could impact local production if other markets are now allowed to come in that have greater capacity. She says she raised that point at the meetings, noting that if they move “too quickly” towards moving barriers and red tape, workers could get caught in the middle.
