The City of St. John’s quietly dealt with a major problem involving the Bannerman Park Loop recently.
The nearly $200,000 expenditure was listed in tiny print as part of the city’s monthly list of contracts awarded over $100,000.
Councillor Tom Davis said the problem and Loop downtime were news to him since a relative uses it almost every day, and he asked for an explanation.
In response, staff said there was a mechanical issue with the chilling unit that keeps the ice cold, classifying it as an emergency repair.
As a result, the job was sole-sourced, with Trane Canada billing the city just over $185,000 for the work.
