Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services is renovating the old hospital in Corner Brook to add 30 long-term care beds, and 15 transitional care beds.
The changes are being made in response to overcrowding at the new Western Memorial Hospital, which area MHA Eddie Joyce has claimed is due to people waiting to enter long term care.
CEO Pat Parfrey says as soon as it is built, having people move into the new beds will provide “immediate relief” for the new hospital.
He believes the new beds will be ready later this year.
Parfrey says the contract for the renovations will need to go out to public tender first, but he is hopeful everything will be ready to go by September.
