The provincial government has launched a new campaign aimed at getting young people into the trades.
The Make it Excellent in the Skilled Trades Campaign encourages people to pursue such careers through apprenticeships, and promotes employers hiring apprentices.
Immigration, Population Growth and skills minister Sarah Stoodley says there will be many opportunities for trades workers over the next decade, thanks to proposed megaprojects in Labrador and some 6,000 people who are projected to be retiring from the industry.
Taylor Whiffen is a grade 12 student at St. Kevin’s High School who is featured in the new ad campaign.
She participated in the Youth Apprenticeship Program as a welder over the last two years and speaks very highly of choosing the trades as a career and encourages others to do the same.
Lori LeDrew, Executive Director of the Office to Advance Women Apprentices, says she is Whiffen’s “biggest fan,” believing she has been a great advocate for the trades.
She “loves” seeing Whiffen featured in the campaign because she wants other young women to see that the trades is a viable career option.
