Premier Andrew Furey remains concerned about the focus on threatened tariffs against Canada following discussions in Washington yesterday between Canada’s premiers and US officials.
Furey calls yesterday’s discussions constructive but concerning.
“Make no mistake, the president is very focused on tariffs, this is not something that’s going to go away in the next couple of weeks, and the next couple of months. The president is laser-focused on tariffs as a source of rebalancing trade around the world and unfortunately industries across Canada, and between Canada and the United States, will seemingly be impacted.”
Furey hopes there will be room for a diplomatic resolution, but he says the focus on tariffs remains.
He says the notion of a “51st state,” as has been repeated by President Trump, is an insult to all Canadians.
“I made no apologies for saying…that is offensive and insulting and is not a part of any constructive dialogue between neighbours and friends.”
