The transportation critic says government has to do better when it comes to planning, especially regarding snowclearing. But the minister says they began the process two years ago.
Government said just before Christmas that it was in the process of acquiring dozens of new pieces of heavy equipment to clear the roads, however most still have not arrived.
PC MHA Loyola O’Driscoll says the department of Transportation and Infrastructure waited too long before putting out the tenders.
“The tenders should be out much sooner so that the equipment arrives in August, not the middle of winter,” says O’Driscoll. “Here we are in the middle of stormy weather and we’re without enough plows.”
Minister Responds
Minister Hutton late Friday afternoon provided an update on the fleet upgrade. Fourteen new truck plows are now at the depots with nine in active service.
The others are being prepped, says Hutton and more are arriving weekly.
