President Donald Trump’s long-threatened tariffs against Canada and Mexico have gone into effect, kicking off a trade war with America’s neighbors.
Trump’s executive order puts 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs, with a lower 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada is retaliating by putting 25 per cent tariffs on American goods worth 155-billion-dollars Canadian over the course of 21 days, starting with taxes on goods worth 30-billion-dollars Canadian. The PM will speak on the tariffs in a news conference scheduled for 12 pm Newfoundland time.
In the wake of all this, Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a “Buy from Newfoundland and Labrador” campaign.
As part of the effort, government will explore new export markets for products from this province, and deepen its connections in Europe and abroad.
