The provincial fisheries minister says he’s hoping the new federal fisheries minister will better collaborate with other governments.
St. John’s MP Joanne Thompson became the new minister of fisheries and oceans on Friday, the first time a Newfoundland and Labrador MP has held the job since Conservative Loyola Hearn from 2006-2008.
Provincial minister Gerry Byrne says Thompson needs to work with the province on joint management and support for harvesters for the future.
Byrne has been highly critical of the previous minister, Diane Lebouthillier, who clashed heads on redfish, cod, and snow crab.
