For the first time since 2021 the province of Newfoundland and Labrador experienced a drop in population – albeit a small one.
According to the latest figures released by Statistics Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador lost approximately 300 residents between the last quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.
Statistics Canada attributes the reduction to a drop in international migration as well as fewer births and an increase in the number of deaths.
Newfoundland and Labrador was one of the few jurisdictions in the country to see a population decline between the end of 2024 and the start of 2025, with PEI and Nova Scotia also seeing very slight drops.
The Stats Can figures show the province’s population now sits at 545,579 compared to 525,895 in the first quarter of 2021.
