Newfoundland and Labrador was the first stop on the campaign trail for Prime Minister Mark Carney, who arrived in St. John’s shortly after calling an election yesterday.
Carney held an event at the St. John’s Convention Centre last evening, met by a crowd of fish harvesters surrounding the building after learning there may be quota cuts of up to 50 per cent in area 3K.
In his address, Carney promised to put more work into the fishery.
He says he’s “here to listen” to harvesters, promising to look at the structure of DFO and bring a sustainable fishery to the province if elected.
Harvesters, who earlier in the day rallied outside the campaign headquarters for federal fisheries minister Joanne Thompson, managed to secure a meeting with the minister for 9:00 this morning.
Meanwhile, Carney is in Gander today speaking with voters in central.
