St. John’s councilors are basking in some relief from recent parking grief.
The city has been getting more development applications — three this week alone — seeking a break on the amount of parking required.
It’s become a divisive issue in the haste to solve the housing crisis, and scuttled at least one recent project.
So it’s not surprising that rezoning for a parking lot in Kenmount Terrace sailed through council’s committee of the whole.
And not just for the parking, but also the adjoining playground linked to a new daycare centre in the Lady Anderson/Ladysmith Drive area.
Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary applauded the entire plan, but particularly the daycare’s southern exposure.“I know that there have been other childcare centres that haven’t thought a lot about the Newfoundland geographics, and where daycare centres have actually been created in areas where the outdoor area is in the northern part of the outside section, so obviously the coldest part of the design. So, really happy to see that that was taken into consideration.”
The rezoning, and project, must still go before the entire council for final approval.
