Snow crab harvesters on the northeast coast met with the federal minister and DFO officials this morning over their concerns surrounding quota cuts in the snow crab fishery in area 3K.
Harvesters from St. Anthony to Cape Freels stand to lose big-time if the quotas are brought into force.
Harvesters argue that the science being used in the stock assessment is flawed.
Richard Gillett of Twillingate updated the dozens of harvesters who turned up outside the DFO office in the east end of St. John’s over the lunch hour, indicating that he’s encouraged that their arguments were heard.
“We did get a commitment from them that they will give us an answer before the end of the day. I know that’s not what we want to hear, but you’ve got to understand it’s a little bit of a process.”
The harvesters are vowing to stay on-site until they get an update on the process, but warn they won’t tolerate anymore possible delays.
