The FFAW is angry and frustrated with quota cuts for snow crab harvesters in area 3K.
Despite repeated attempts to sway DFO officials on the matter, union president Dwan Street was informed last night that there won’t be any changes to the decision to cut quotas.
Street says the decision will amount to “absolute devastation” for harvesters from Cape Freels to St. Anthony. She says it’s not a matter of tying up boats, but of not being able to operate their boats due to the economic reality.
Street says some “fantastic work” was done by union representatives in making their case disputing the scientific process used, and the impact of quota cuts, but in the end, nothing could be done.
“At this point the decision is final. Of course we know that once parliament was dissolved everything is in caretaker mode right now.” They met with DFO officials yesterday in hopes that the cuts could be reversed, but “that decision is final.”
