The trial for a man facing more than 70 sexual violence charges against a dozen youth is in a holding pattern as lawyers hash out legal arguments in private.
The trial for 64-year-old Tony Humby has seen several false starts, the most recent being last week when the judge agreed to hear applications from the defence regarding the admissibility of new information.
The applications involve a break-in at Humby’s house after his arrest but before the home was secured by police, and the accidental disclosure of a document by the Crown that the defence says could be critical to Humby’s innocence.
The new information came to light in late February, as lawyers were working toward a plea deal.
The people in possession of that new information are being called to speak about it during this morning’s in-camera session that is closed to media.
VOCM News is following the proceedings, however, and will have an update once the courtroom reopens to the public and media.
Humby’s co-accused, 82-year-old Bruce Escott, has already been sentenced to 13 years in prison in the case.
