Premier Andrew Furey says Prime Minister Mark Carney’s early track record could bode well for the fishery, and long-sought-after joint management of it.
Furey says he discussed the thorny issue, along with other provincial priorities, with Carney in the run-up to the federal Liberal leadership.
And while he didn’t elaborate, Furey pointed to the prime minister’s quick kill of the carbon tax as reason for optimism.
“I would say to the FFAW and fish harvesters in 3K that we have a prime minister who will listen, and is not then afraid to act — it’s one thing to listen but also to put those learned lessons into action. And I hope that Mr. Carney forms the government and I hope he will negotiate with the new premier the ability to joint manage our fishery.”
Federal election day is exactly one month from today — Monday, April 28th.
