U.S. President Donald Trump is calling a call this morning with Prime Minister Mark Carney “productive.”
Trump posted to his Truth Social profile that he and Carney “agree on many things” and “will be meeting immediately after” the election to work on “other factors, that will end up being great for both” the U.S. and Canada.
Trump referred to reciprocal tariffs set to be imposed on April 2nd.
“And I’m not referring to Canada” he told reporters, “but many countries have taken advantage of us, the likes of which nobody even thought was possible for many, many decades, and that has to stop. We’re going to end up with a very good relationship with Canada and a lot of the other countries. Some we probably won’t. It won’t be so pleasant.”
Carney’s office meanwhile, says the two leaders agreed to start comprehensive negotiations which will be led by Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

NDP Pledge EI Changes to combat Trump Tariffs
The federal NDP is pledging to defend workers and improve employment insurance under Trump’s tariff threats.
The party is outlining ways to fix the federal EI program so that workers get more benefits faster.
St. John’s East NDP candidate Mary Shortall says U.S. President Donald Trump is “too unpredictable for anyone to know what’s going to happen next week…or even the next hour.” That’s why she says, people need a proactive approach to protect them in the future.
The NDP is suggesting that the threshold to qualify for EI be reduced to a universal 360-hour standard and ensure that benefits cover at-risk contractors and the self-employed.
