Newfoundland and Labrador nominees took home a single JUNO during this year’s awards in Vancouver.
Inuk soprano Deantha Edmunds won Classical Composition of the Year, becoming the first Inuk artist to receive the award. She was also part of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra Sinfonia, which was nominated for Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble) but did not win.
The province also had nominations in Kellie Loder, with their album Transitions up for Contemporary Album of the Year, and Robert Colbourne as a runner up for MusiCount’s Teacher of the Year Award.
While he may not have taken home a JUNO, Colbourne is still considering this year’s awards a big win.
The longtime music educator and choral director at Holy Heart of Mary High School had shared with VOCM News that he was just as excited about the possibility of meeting host Michael Bublé as he was about his nomination.
Last week, his students launched a campaign to help make it happen, and Bublé responded enthusiastically on social media.
On Saturday, Colbourne’s wish became a reality, ending with a selfie posted on Bublé’s Instagram stories.
