A Portugal Cove resident says more needs to be done to slow down traffic on Tuckers Hill after a car was totalled early Sunday morning.
Peter Newman says he heard a loud thump just after 8 a.m. yesterday, only to find a car had crashed, uprooted a tree and had its engine quite literally fly out of the car.
He says speeding has become an issue in the area, and he worries what would have happened had nearby Beachy Cove Elementary been in session.
He says the town council should install speedbumps on the road to discourage speeding.
“It’s a lot of traffic and very high speeds, and it can be winter or summer, but in the summer it’ll pick up. (I’m) just thinking there’s Beachy Cove Elementary school just up the road. Fortunately, this was 8 o’clock on a Sunday morning. Imagine if it was 8 o’clock on a Monday morning,” he said.
