Premier Andrew Furey took time Monday morning to meet with the family of the late John Murphy, a broadcasting pioneer who led the VOCM Radio Network for over 25 years.
Murphy passed away earlier this month at the age of 82.
The premier presented the family with a Newfoundland and Labrador flag—one that flew at half-mast on the day of Murphy’s passing.
A family member shared their appreciation in a social media post, calling the moment deeply meaningful.
Murphy began his radio career in 1963 and later became VOCM’s general manager, guiding the station to the top of the ratings.
Known for his quick wit and commanding voice, he was also a passionate sports broadcaster and a proud inductee of the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame.
The Murphy family says the recognition means the world to them.
