Premier Andrew Furey was featured on CNN yesterday responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s series of tariffs—and reciprocal tariffs—on Canadian goods and the impact on both Canadians and Americans.
Furey told The Situation Room host Wolf Blitzer that no-one wins in a trade war.
He explained that Canadians understand that tariffs are going to be a lose-lose situation on either side of the Canada/U.S. border.
Furey also addressed concerns that the mutually beneficial economic relationship Canada once enjoyed with the United States is over thanks to the trade war and Trump’s suggestions that Canada become the 51st state.
“We feel threatened by an imperialistic (and) expansionist agenda by the President of the United States,” explained Furey, and while Canadians understand that they need to have their ‘elbows up’ in the corners, “that hopefully this game and this period will pass, and we can rebuild a constructive relationship.” Furey also made clear to American viewers that Canadians don’t hold any animosity to the American people as a whole.
