The Newfoundland and Labrador chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students is looking for commitments from all federal parties that would make post secondary education more accessible.
They say the national average student debt is over $30,000, and over half of bachelor’s degree graduates are “burdened with financial strain.”
Chair Mary Feltham argues that it is “imperative” that student issues are addressed in this election.”
She says post-secondary enrollment across the country has declined, particularly for international students, due to limitations on study permit approvals.
Beyond affordability they also want to see mental health issues addressed.
Feltham says they want parties to better utilize the Youth Mental Health Fund, a $500-million initiative announced last year.
They would like to see a dedicated mental health stream that Feltham says would cost around $350-million over three years.
