Scientists and other academics can often get bogged down in technical terminology when talking about their work, and an event at MUN later this week aims to help them explain their research in a way that more people can understand.
The event, called The Gong Show, is part of the Faculty of Science’s annual Scientific Endeavours in Academia Conference.
MUN researchers take to the stage to present their work. If they start using technical jargon or get “too science-y” the gong will sound, and they must rephrase what they are saying.
Dr. Jacqueline Blundell, the associate dean of research at MUN, admits that changing the way they speak about their work can be difficult.
She says it is a skill that everyone needs to work on, noting that she is constantly trying to check herself when she speaks about her own work.
The Gong Show will take place in MUN’s Core Science Building this Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
