NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is dismissing speculation about his political future.
The latest polls show the traditional support for the party being chipped away as voters absorb the impact of Donald Trump’s threats against Canada.
The party has failed to run a full slate and speculation from Dalhousie political scientist Lori Turnbull last week suggested that Singh is fighting for his political life.
Pollsters have the NDP trailing far behind the Liberals and Conservatives, garnering less than 10 per cent of support among decided voters. That’s well below the party’s traditional base of 18 to 19 per cent..
In a campaign stop in St. John’s on the weekend, Singh dismissed the latest polling numbers, pointing to the party’s recent wins in Ontario.
He says more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have been turning to his party in the last month.
“I wouldn’t put a whole lot of trust in (the polls),” says Singh, “they don’t know how to accurately gauge our support.”
