The boats are headed out to the fishing grounds and the FFAW is claiming victory in the dispute over the price of snow crab.
The price-setting panel has ruled in favour of the price proposed by the union, almost $5.00 per pound. Processors suggested that they pay $4.50.
Union President Dwan Street says the ruling establishes a starting price that carries through the season, followed by a settlement at the end of the season based on market performance.
She says the receipts go to a third-part auditor, who will determine what the rebate will be in the fall.
Street says this year’s structure brings further advancements for transparency and fairness. Harvesters will now receive sales receipts up to November 1—extending well beyond the previous three-week post-fishery deadline. The agreement also ensures receipts for 5-8 oz sections, not just sales to Boston, and guarantees that crewmembers will be paid directly by the company.
