The provincial government has inked a five-year contract for the installation, operation, and maintenance of speed cameras.
The contract with Jenoptik Smart Mobility Solutions is for a minimum of 10 cameras, with the potential to add more as the program is rolled out, and also for the issuing of tickets.
The cameras will be installed on both provincial and municipal roads and highways, starting with Veterans Memorial.
The location of other cameras will be done through consultation with municipalities and law enforcement, and will be based on traffic data that demonstrates high rates of speeding.
Signage will be installed to notify drivers that speed cams are in use.
The cameras will only capture images of the vehicle’s license plate. The owner of said vehicle will then receive a ticket from Jenoptik, which will be payable to the province.
Government set aside $3.9-million for the initiative in the budget.
