The provincial government’s court challenge on equalization is continuing to wind its way slowly through the courts.
Despite repeated attempts by a succession of NL governments, perceived flaws in the equalization formula have not been addressed by Ottawa, forcing the province to resort to take the legal route.
The provincial government filed a court challenge of the federal equalization program last June and Finance Minister Siobhan Coady says the process continues.
Other provinces have since joined Newfoundland and Labrador in the challenge. The minister acknowledges that the process will be slow-moving.
Coady doesn’t expect that the results of the federal election will change the concerns they’ve raised.
She says successive provincial governments have failed to convince Ottawa to change the formula, so the province maintains that going to the courts is the right thing to do.
