The provincial government is moving forward with its plans to have speed cameras on some roads and highways across the province; now the official opposition is pressing to have something similar put on school buses.
Government revealed last week that it has signed a five-year contract with Jenoptik for the installation and maintenance of at least 10 speed cameras, as well as the issuing of tickets.
The critic for Digital Government and Service NL, Loyola O’Driscoll, says it is a good thing that government is moving forward with those cameras. Now, he would like to see action on their calls for similar cameras on school buses.
He says they asked questions about it during debate in the House of Assembly, noting that vehicles speeding past school buses that are letting kids off is a big safety concern.
