Twenty high school students have been recognized by the provincial government for their academic prowess.
The recipients of the 2025 Research Inspired Student Enrichment Awards were announced in St. John’s on Friday.
The awards recognize excellence in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.
Each of the winners will attend one of three enrichment programs over the summer. Two of the programs are in Massachusetts, while the other is in Toronto.
Sophia Zhang, who is in grade 11 at Holy Heart, will be heading to the Research Science Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for her program.
Zhang says she is excited for the experience.
While she doesn’t know what field she will be working in, she does say she is interested in electrical and mechanical engineering.
She says she is interested in engineering because she’s interested in “making the world a better place,” potentially through things like climate change and renewable energy.
