The organization which speaks for persons with diabetes would like to see voters ask questions of candidates regarding health care and their intentions if elected.
Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest rate of diabetes of any province, and Diabetes Canada says living with chronic health conditions is causing the greatest burden on the health care system.
Laura O’Driscoll, who’s responsible for government affairs with Diabetes Canada, says it’s important that people ask those who knock on their door looking for a vote their positions on issues such as Pharmacare which, will include coverage for drugs for diabetes and contraceptives.
“There are some wonderful devices now such as glucose monitors and insulin pumps but, unfortunately, they are very expensive,” says O’Driscoll. “They can run upwards of $10,000, and access to those is very much a health equity issue. So it’s important to ask what their plan is to reduce barriers to access, and to reduce high deductibles and copays,” says O’Driscoll.
Election Day is Monday, April 28.
