RCMP are reminding drivers of the importance of abiding by “move over” laws.
Drivers are required by law to slow to 30 km/h below the posted speed limit and to change lanes where available when approaching a construction site or place where emergency responders are working.
That includes police officers who have pulled another vehicle onto the side of the road.

RCMP Corporal Jolene Garland says roads and highways are the workplace for a lot of people, and everyone has a role in making sure it’s a safe place to carry out their jobs.
“It’s definitely an uneasy feeling when you’re out trying to conduct your work on the side of a roadway and having a vehicle fly by you, say at 100 km/h or more, while you have your back turned to the traffic and are trying to do your job.”
The minimum fine for a first-time offence is $390, up to a maximum fine of $1,170.
